The Prison Service of the Czech Republic to Exhibit at Future Forces 2024
11.10.2024
The Prison Service of the Czech Republic is an armed law enforcement state agency administering the penitentiary system in the Czech Republic – sentence of imprisonment, pre-trial detention and forensic (protective) detention. The Czech Prison Service not only ensures the above-mentioned but also carries out many supporting services connected to the correctional system. The Czech Prison Service is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Justice. Its central-level administrative body is the Directorate General (Headquarters). It operates 35 penal institutions (10 remand prisons and 25 prisons) and 2 educational facilities: The Prison Service Academy providing training of staff members and the Prison Service Vocational School providing vocational training of prisoners. Two Forensic Detention Facilities (FDF) are part of two individual prisons. There are also two prison hospitals providing medical services to prisoners operating inside of prisons. Within the ongoing transformation of prison health services in 2024 the hospitals have merged into an independent organization under the Ministry of Justice and since 2025 the organization is going to cover all the health care services within the whole prison service. There are more than 11,000 members of our staff. About one third consists of "uniformed" staff (further divided into Prison Guard and Judicial Guard branches) and "civilian" staff (medicians, psychologists, social workers, teachers, educators, administration, logistics etc.).
What we do
The paramount task of the Czech Prison Service is naturally the management of the prison system. In doing this, some of the main responsibilities are:
- guarding and managing prisons and keeping law and order within them;
- ensuring lawful sentences;
- guarding and managing forensic detention facilities;
- providing prisoner escorts/transfers;
- providing treatment programmes and special therapies;
- creating conditions for prisoners´ employment (either by the Service itself or by third parties);
- providing health-care services to prisoners.
The Czech Prison Service, however, is also responsible for:
- providing security and keeping law and order within courts, courtrooms during trials, at the Ministry of Justice and state prosecutor buildings;
- investigating the criminal activities of prisoners;
- carrying out penological research.
