CHAIRMAN REMARK

We are delighted to announce the Future Forces Forum Space conference, taking place on the 17 October 2024 at PVA Prague. Welcome to our first Future Forces Space conference 2024. The Conference aims to bring together armed forces community, subject matter experts, industry, and academia stakeholders to address the main conceptual challenges of the role of space as a key domain in contemporary and future operations. The conference will address the main issue of operational and tactical context and operating environment which is characterized by complexity, instability, uncertainty, and pervasive operation. The concept of SPACE in NATO as a new domain refers to recognizing space as an operational domain alongside land, air, sea, and cyber. This acknowledgment underscores the importance of space-based capabilities for modern warfare, including satellite communications, navigation, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. NATO aims to enhance its space capabilities to better support its missions, improve situational awareness, and ensure the security of allied nations' space assets. This involves developing policies, strategies, and technologies to effectively operate in and protect space assets within the framework of collective defense.

The conference will focus on the following themes from the point of the Alliance: 

• Space Domain Awareness: Comprehensive situational awareness in space is vital for monitoring potential threats and space weather conditions, crucial for the safety and security of space operations. Enhanced space domain awareness supports preemptive actions and strategic decisions, safeguarding assets and maintaining stability in space activities.
• Space for ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance): Space-based ISR capabilities are indispensable for real-time intelligence gathering, offering NATO unparalleled advantages in surveillance and reconnaissance for informed decision-making. The continuous advancement of satellite technologies enhances NATO's strategic planning and operational effectiveness.
• Cyber Security in Space: Protecting space infrastructure from cyber threats is paramount as adversaries increasingly target satellite communications and data systems. Developing robust cyber defenses ensures the resilience and security of critical space-based assets, supporting NATO's communications and operational capabilities.
• Communications: Secure and reliable communications via space systems are foundational for NATO's operational coherence and effectiveness, enabling command and control across global missions. The strategic emphasis on advanced satellite technology ensures uninterrupted communication links, even in the most challenging environments.

CONFERENCE PROGRAME
